If you are interested in opening a sandwich shop but you have little to no experience running a business or working in food service, you might be wondering what you can and should do to get the process started. Get to know some of the steps to take if you want to open your very own sandwich shop. Then, you can get the process started as soon as possible.

Start with a Food Handler's Permit

While you may want to jump right into running your business and finding a location, you will want to start small with your sandwich shop business. Start out by getting yourself a food handler's permit if you do not already have one. You will need this to be able to work with and serve food to customers. It is an essential part of your business.

You should have this before you scout locations and start trying to build your business because knowing the laws and rules around food handling will better guide your decisions on all of these other factors. You can get your food handler's permit through in-person classes, or in most states, you can complete the process online.

Find the Right Location

Finding the right location for your sandwich shop is the key to success. You want a location that gets a lot of foot traffic, for example. That way, you have more potential customers in the immediate vicinity and have to do less work to draw people in.

You also want a location that is close to other businesses (like offices) or close to schools or universities. If you want your sandwich shop to be in high demand, locating yourself next to other places of business, where people may need to get lunch and dinner, can be a huge business booster.

Scout out your potential locations for a few days at least before you commit. Watch how much traffic goes by. Watch how many people stop at other businesses in the same area. Check out how many potential customers you would have. This will help you better settle on the proper location for your sandwich shop.

Offer Low-Price Coffee

Once you have your location and are getting ready to open, you will need to plan out your menu. And you want to draw people into your sandwich shop, right? One way to do that is to offer something at a ridiculously low price that (almost) everybody wants, like coffee. Even good-quality coffee can be cheap to buy in bulk for your shop. You can sell it for a low price to draw in customers, who you can then up-sell on sandwiches and other goodies you carry in your shop.

Once you have loyal customers that like your cheap coffee, they will come back for other items and spread the word about your shop. Low-cost, high-profit items like coffee are a great way to draw in a loyal customer base.

Now that you know a few steps to take if you want to open a sandwich shop, you can be sure you are doing what you can to make your shop a success as you get ready to open.
